Well the cats out of the bag now that Tennille and everyone at the salon knows so I guess I can tell the whole world now….that’s right…I’m pregnant! :-))))
My due date is around May 22 give or take…a week or two 🙂 I’m roughly three months along right now and this pregnancy is so different from my last. Or maybe it’s been so long (7.5 years!) that I just don’t remember.
One thing that’s similar this time though is my heightened sense of paranoia. I worry about EVERYTHING! Things like the lotion I use and the gum I chew really stress me out. So naturally I’ve been worried about what I put on my nails.
I remember learning in nail school that it was safe to work as a nail technician while pregnant and I’ve known several woman who have and delivered healthy babies. However I read on Babycenter that some studies show being around the fumes all day has shown to have a higher risk of miscarriage while other studies are inconclusive. Although I miss working in the salon I was slightly less paranoid after reading that….
A benefit of being pregnant is that my nails are so strong and healthy! It’s amazing! I haven’t been able to take my prenatal vitamins as much as I should because they make me sick but my hair and nails have still NEVER looked better! If only the rest of my body reacted to pregnancy the same way! 🙂 I don’t know if I’ll be able to walk upright at full term the way my lower back and hips have been hurting and morning sickness has been pretty rough….but I just keep telling myself it’ll all be worth it. 🙂
So back to nail care while pregnant. I have decided to back off on polishing my nails as much. I figure it’s not a bad idea to avoid possibly toxic substances as much as possible. Although the polishes I use all promise to be free of harmful ingredients. Well, all of them except for my very favorite dear topcoat…Seche Vite. I’ve used it on myself a few times but I think I am going to buy a topcoat that is more gentle and will just have to be ok with nails that don’t shine as long and will definitely chip sooner. My midwife with my first pregnancy once told me she wouldn’t even use hairspray while she was pregnant in order to avoid the fumes. I think I can sacrifice my love of Seche Vite for the love of a healthy baby.
Of course I’m not an expert so if anyone has any info to dispute my theories I would love to hear them!
Were there any weird precautions you would take while you were pregnant?
Also, here is a super fun easy contest to enter and you have the chance to win a $500 Reebok Gift Card!!! I have a lot of Crossfit gear I could buy with that! Yes I am still Crossfitting…go me. 🙂 All you must do to enter is guess when Heidi Powell (Chris Powell’s beautiful wife) will have her baby! Fun right!
Ok I’m going to wrap this up. Sorry I don’t have a doctors professional opinion on this subject. If your really concerned about false nails or polishes while pregnant I would recommend doing a lot of research and talking to your doctor or midwife…I think ultimately you need to really do what your inner voice tells you is right for your body and baby. But on that note I will talk to my doc about it at my next appointment and report back!
Thanks for reading and have a wonderful weekend!!!
