Help For Dry Winter Skin

I don’t know why I say dry “winter” skin…lately my skin has been dry YEAR ROUND! It’s mostly just in two spots too…the tops of my hands and my shins…so weird.

Actually the tops of my hands is understandeable. I fill my sink with the hottest water and dish soap and bleach every morning…and although my kitchen gloves are hanging RIGHT by the sink, do I put them on? Hardly ever…why do we do that?!? When I was working in the salon full time almost every single one of my clients knew she should wear gloves to clean but only a few would do it religiously. I know I don’t wear mine because I hate the way they feel. Does anyone have some kitchen gloves they just LOVE? Let me know please! :)))

My shins on the other hand I am having a hard time with. I’ve tried applying coconut oil right after I get out of the shower to see if that helps at all and it doesn’t make much of a difference. I have a hard time putting most lotions on my body because they are loaded with so many bad ingredients but I’m sure Aquaphor or Vaseline would probably help with the itching.

However, I remember something my old client and friend Nancy told me when she was having dry skin issues. It came from a doctor too so I feel safe repeating it. And it’s actually the only thing that’s working for me.

Two words–Cold Water.

Hot water is one of the worst things for our skin. Nancy actually told me she quit taking hot showers, which I just cannot do. I just love them so much. Especially in the winter time when our old house is cold in the mornings…it’s the only way I can warm up! I know Nancy loved her hot showers too but I think her skin issues were more severe than mine…I keep telling myself anyway. 🙂 So I came up with the solution to just rinse my legs off with as cold water as I can stand when I am done showering every morning. If you have dry, itchy skin all over, you should rinse off all over with as cold water as you can stand. When I do this, my legs do not itch AT ALL. I promise.

As for my hands, I just make sure to do the same thing when I “forget or am too lazy” to put on my gloves. After I’ve scrubbed the dishes and cleaned the kitchen I just run my hands under cold water for a minute. Voila! Problem solved!

I still use coconut oil on my hands and face every day and occasionally apply Hempz lotion as well (I love Hempz lotion!).

I truly believe beautiful, healthy skin comes from the inside out too so make sure to drink TONS of water–I try to drink around a gallon a day. Try your hardest to eat as healthy as possible. I can almost always tell when I’ve been splurging on too much sugar because my skin FREAKS out. Don’t skimp on healthy fats. I like to think of our bodies as a machine and every machine needs a good dose of oil to keep everything running smoothly.

So to sum it up:

Tips for Dry Skin

1. Rinse your skin with cold water.
2. Drink LOTS of water.
3. Try to eat healthy as much as possible.

You don’t need to buy expensive creams or products…unless your dry skin is very severe you should probably see a doctor. But if it’s only problematic occasionally try these tips and let me know how it works for you!
